Problem Solved
When people think of modern convenience, food delivery sits near the top of the list—and few companies have shaped that reality like DoorDash. But behind the app icon is a grounded origin story, one rooted in observation, problem-solving, and timing.
So let’s break it down clearly: who created DoorDash, and what actually came first—the idea, the delivery, or the company?
Who Created DoorDash?
DoorDash was co-founded in 2013 by Tony Xu, alongside Andy Fang, Stanley Tang, and Evan Moore. Xu is widely recognized as the driving force behind the vision and long-term strategy of the company and currently serves as its CEO.
But the story doesn’t begin with venture capital or Silicon Valley hype.
What Came First: The App or the Problem?
The problem came first. Always.
While Xu was a student at Stanford, he noticed a recurring issue among small business owners—especially local restaurants:
Many simply couldn’t afford drivers, systems, or software to deliver efficiently.
So instead of building an app first, the founders tested the idea in the most stripped-down way possible.
The Real Origin: Palo Alto Delivery (Before DoorDash Was “DoorDash”)
Before the company officially existed, Xu and his co-founders launched a simple website called Palo Alto Delivery.
They personally delivered food for local restaurants to see if:
-
Customers would use it
-
Restaurants actually needed it
-
The model could scale
That experiment came first.
Only after validating real demand did they rebrand and incorporate as DoorDash.
